Do Hangovers Really Get Worse After 30?
Do Hangovers Really Get Worse After 30?
What causes a hangover?
A hangover is the result of several biological processes happening at once. As your body breaks down alcohol, it produces acetaldehyde — a toxic intermediate that must be further metabolised. At the same time, alcohol can disrupt sleep, alter immune and inflammatory responses, affect blood sugar regulation and place additional demands on normal metabolism. The result isn’t one single problem, but a combination of effects that can leave you feeling physically and mentally depleted the next day.
Does drinking water prevent a hangover?
Water helps replace some of the fluid lost while drinking, but hydration alone cannot prevent a hangover. Alcohol affects much more than fluid balance, and drinking large amounts of water at the end of the night cannot undo everything that has already happened. A better approach is to stay hydrated throughout the evening, eat before drinking and think about recovery before the next morning arrives.
Why do I feel anxious after drinking?
Alcohol can initially make you feel relaxed by slowing activity in the nervous system. But as it wears off, the brain can rebound towards a more stimulated state. Combined with fragmented sleep, dehydration and changes in blood sugar, this can leave you feeling unusually alert, restless or anxious the next day — sometimes referred to as “hangxiety.”
Why can’t I sleep after drinking?
Alcohol can make you fall asleep faster while actually reducing sleep quality. As it is metabolised during the night, sleep tends to become lighter and more fragmented, with more frequent waking and disruption to normal sleep architecture. So eight hours in bed after drinking doesn’t necessarily mean eight hours of restorative sleep.
When is the best time to support recovery?
Recovery doesn’t have to start the next morning. By then, many of the processes that leave you feeling depleted — disrupted sleep, fluid loss and the metabolic demands of processing alcohol — have already been underway for hours. Eating beforehand, staying hydrated and supporting your body before and during the night can make recovery a proactive habit rather than a morning-after reaction.
What is pre-drinking protection?
Pre-drinking protection means preparing your body before alcohol-related stress begins. Alcohol metabolism requires your body to process ethanol and its intermediate by-products while also dealing with changes in hydration, nutrient status and sleep. Eating before drinking, staying hydrated and providing appropriate nutritional support beforehand shifts the focus from fixing the aftermath to preparing for it.
