Drinking, Explained.

Straight answers to the questions everyone asks.

A hangover is caused by several effects of alcohol at once — including acetaldehyde exposure, fluid loss, disrupted sleep, inflammation and changes in blood sugar. That’s why symptoms can affect both your body and your mind.

Water helps, but it’s only part of the picture. Drink around 500ml before going out, have a glass of water after every one or two alcoholic drinks, and another glass before bed. This helps replace fluids lost through alcohol, but won’t address other factors such as acetaldehyde, disrupted sleep or inflammation.

As alcohol wears off, the brain can rebound from a sedated state into a more stimulated one. Poor sleep and changes in blood sugar can add to the effect, leaving you feeling unusually restless or anxious the next day — often called “hangxiety”.

Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but as it wears off later in the night, sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented. That’s why eight hours in bed after drinking may not feel like eight hours of restorative sleep.

Before you drink. Your body starts processing alcohol from the first drink, so eating, drinking water and taking appropriate nutritional support beforehand gives your body support when it actually needs it — rather than waiting until the next morning.

Eat a proper meal 1–2 hours beforehand, drink around 500ml of water before going out, and take any pre-drinking nutritional support as directed. Starting the night well fed and with enough fluids gives your body a better baseline for processing alcohol.

Yes. Eating before drinking slows alcohol absorption. Aim for a proper meal containing protein, carbohydrates and some fat rather than drinking on an empty stomach.

There’s no guaranteed way to completely prevent a hangover, but preparation can make a meaningful difference. Drinking less, eating beforehand, drinking enough water and using evidence-based pre-drinking nutritional support may help reduce next-day symptoms.
